She had a vision of talent…

May 22, 2009 Leave a comment

…she didn’t bank on that vision being Kara DioGuardi instead of her.  LMAO!!!

I didn’t watch the final American Idol so of course, when I heard about this little showdown I zipped over to Youtube and found it.  How freakin’ hilarious!!!  You know, it’s one thing to be deluded about one’s abilities, it’s another thing to wrap it up in sex and try to sell it.  She just couldn’t sell it, not even in a bikini.

I tell ya, when you set yourself up like that…you kinda deserve what’cha get.  Not only was she out-sung, she was out-classed, out-sassed and out-bikinied as well!  Go KARA!!

From Television Without Pity:

This is the best! Kara doesn’t even pretend that this isn’t about making Bikini Kill feel retarded, and Bikini Kill is so dumb she’s like, “I don’t even know how stupid this makes me!” Mostly I just love it, because I was on Kara’s side — “Next time just show up naked” is precisely when I fell in love with her, if you remember — but A) how fun for all of them to be in on it, and B ) um, how hot was Kara DioGuardi already? I forgot how Riot Grrl obsessed I was with her twenty weeks ago, when everything she said was brilliant and funny, and I relegated her to the smarter version of Randy/Paula, but damn. She’s so Third Wave she’s like already laying out on the beach wearing a bikini and being all, “Whatever, I got SPF 5K.”

It’s so nice when your role models actually put the pedal to the metal instead of talking the talk: “Yeah, I called you a wh@re that lived off your t!ts. And then guess what, you got new t!ts. But I can still sing better than you, which we all know is the nominal point, and I’m a gifted writer, and I’m hotter than you. In about sixty ways. So when I said you were living off your body because you’re too lazy to live off anything else, I wasn’t talking shit: I could take off this dress and make some f@cking dime on it. I choose not to, because I am an artist. I’ve been there, I’ve made the choice. I’m lucky to have figured out before I was dead that there was a choice.”

“When I say you need something better, that’s not me being fat or ugly or any other thing where I’m less awesome than you: I’m saying I could take the easy road, and chose not to. And you can’t hear it, because you think womanhood is a war you’re automatically drafted into. But if you could hear it, what I’m saying is that you have a million different ways of proving yourself, and instead you take the one way that guarantees you’ll never get anywhere at all. It’s a he!! of a lot easier to point the finger if I’m not hotter than you, because you can say I’m being defensive, but guess what: that was never what it was about. It’s possible to live outside the economy of women hating women. And I’m telling you: every woman that ever tried to stop you, they weren’t being mean, they were trying to save your life.”

And she’s like the only person with the credentials, and the basic Bikini Kill recipe, and the body, to make that point at this moment: she could easily be Bikini Kill, and that’s all she was ever trying to say. Try harder. Be Better. And that’s why I loved Kara six months ago, and that’s why I love her now. “Next time just come naked” isn’t an insult, it’s an option. And there are way better f@cking options.

You don’t have to be ugly to be smart, and you don’t have to be smart to be ugly: life is actually much better than that. You can do everything, and still be in charge of your sh!t, because you are automatically good at more than one thing. We as people are so stuck on living in the house of our best accomplishment that we’re scared to be more complex than that, or go to the scarier places. But that’s a system invented by other people to keep us small. Taking it down to just one thing — pretty, smart, funny, cool — is selling yourself short, because you’re bigger than that: You Are Your Territory. You own what you earn, and you earn what you own.

Exactly. *wink* And seriously, did she really NOT see this coming? Even just a little bit?

Britain’s got more talent.

“I’m gobsmacked, absolutely gobsmacked,”

She said.

boyle

Sudden success can do that to a person and she’s definitely on her way. Honestly, at this point…she doesn’t really need “Britain’s Got Talent”.

By now almost everyone knows about the gifted phenomenon that is Susan Boyle, the Scottish lass with a good dose of moxie.

Moxy (mŏk'sē) n. slang: 1. The ability to face difficulty with spirit and courage. 2. Aggressive energy; initiative. 3. Skill; know-how.

So what is it about her?  As singers go, she is exceptional, but not a prodigy.  Good singers are a dime a dozen…and even great singers are becoming rather commonplace.  She doesn’t have the most original voice in the world and in fact, by her own admission could “improve and get better.”  She said, “I’m please [sic] with my performance, but I can do better.”

It’s nothing but the obvious.  The Underdog that stuns the world, literally.  She walked out on that stage with a goofy kind of self-confidence and I admit it…I rolled my eyes.  That thing they say about first impressions…it’s true.  We all do it, we judge people before they even have a chance.  That is one of the most basic of human characteristics.  I am happy to admit I was a fool for my initial lack of faith in Susan Boyle.

I have to say, I love it when stuff like this happens.  Knowing her situation, unemployed, enduring the sad passing of her mother, the lack of opportunity for her own musical aspirations…and the song she chose.  ”I had a dream my life would be, So different from this hell I’m living.  So different now from what it seemed, now life has killed the dream I dreamed.”  She is singing about her self, her life…and it breaks the heart to hear it so beautifully done.

The irony (and you know I’m a big fan of irony): her singing a song that proclaims the death of a dream is actually the song that catapults her into world-wide acclaim.

In 1999, Susan made a professional recording of “Cry Me a River”…and her voice is just as golden then as it is now:

Only 1000 copies of the disc were ever produced, but we’ve got hold of the long-forgotten recording and it’s now on our site. A showbiz insider said: “This is a real coup for the Record. The whole world would have wanted to find this.

“People will be scrambling to get their hands on this CD. They will be like gold dust soon.”

….

It’s all a far cry from 1999, when Susan recorded her track for the charity compilation CD at Whitburn Academy, where X Factor winner Leon Jackson went to school.

The Millennium Celebration disc, which was partly funded by Whitburn Community Council, was the brainchild of local newspaper editor Eddie Anderson.

He launched a search for unsigned acts to take part. And as soon as he heard Susan at the auditions he knew he had found something special.

“I was amazed when she sang,” Eddie said. “It was probably the same reaction as everyone had last Saturday.

“Susan was exactly the same then as she is now. She has a fabulous and unique talent.”

Excerpts:  The Daily Record article

Onward and upward. The best is yet to come.

I can’t wait to hear what she brings us in the future. She is the poster-child for hopes fullfilled and dreams come true. GO SUSAN!!!

Never judge a book by it’s cover.

(Hi-Def version here)

Loved this one.  Susan Boyle…the name that is now on the lips of millions people (or maybe it’s just me – I must have watched her video millions of times by now).  Talk about grace under pressure.

Susan – you have become an overnight sensation.  I can’t wait to hear what you will sing this week, and next week, and the week after that…we all know you’ve already won it.  Congratulations!!!  Can’t wait to see what is next in store for you.  :)

ETA:  Had to grab this screen cap of Simon.  ROFLMAO!  Never seen him quite so besotted.  It’s worth remembering as he isn’t blown out of his socks very often.  ;)

"You light up my life." *sigh*

John Mayer

“Ik ben het werk teruggekomen. Ik dacht u zou kunnen houden van te weten wat ik zie.”

Roughly Translated: "I work back. I thought you might like to know what I see."

Yep.  That’s about what my view looks like too.  Well, minus the gorgeous electric guitar (mine’s acoustic).  And the awesome gear.  And the white trainers…and interesting carpet.  And the man-hands (I don’t have man-hands).

The amazing and irrepressible Sara Bareilles

“Gravity”.  I love how this video is laid out.

She’s walking through our “solar system”…a quite literal interpretation of breaking free of gravity…”I don’t want to fall another moment into your gravity.”

Brilliant choreography using flares, mini-flashlights, and bike lights as shooting stars and comets that swirl in the “cosmos” as she walks away from the “sun” past “meteor showers” (water fountain), “planets”, “asteroids”, to the outer edges of the familiar.  Water covering the ground reflects the hanging lights above giving the scene a wholly ethereal, floating in space feel.  Absolutely brilliant.

If you figure out what the heck the umbrellas are, feel free to clue me in. kthxbie.

Oren Lavie

Few musicians can capture my attention instantly.  I mean…instantly like heroinstantly.  In fact, I can only name four: Sting, John Mayer, Joni Mitchell, and Sarah McLaughlin.

Today, I have to add a fifth: Oren Lavie.

oren-lavie-by-georg-roske

He has a nice sampling of his latest (first?) project “Opposite Side of the Sea” on his myspace page.  Truly wonderful, especially “The Man Who Isn’t There”.

These musicians all have some effervescent, intangible quality that I cannot quite put my finger on.  Whatever it is, it’s like a key to my soul or something.  I could listen to them all forever.

:)
